Fake Rocks
Hide-a-way rocks are an easy hiding place for geocaching. A hide-a-way rock can be purchased at a department or hobby craft store. The rock is a plastic, hollow molded container that looks like a rock. The size of these fake rocks range from very small made to hide a house key, to shoebox-sized. The shoebox-sized rocks are perfect for geocaches as the hidden object and the log book fit easily inside.
In a Tree
Using feathers and sticks, create a fake nest on the top of a plastic box for a hidden cache. Real birds may use the nest as their own if you do not place fake birds in the nest to make it appear occupied. Ensure the plastic box is sealed and weatherproof to keep the cache safe. Use non-fraying rope, such as nylon, and tie the box in a nook in a tree. Another camouflage for a tree cache a bird feeder. Using a cylindrical bird feeder, hide the cache logbook and object inside the middle.
In Tubes
Hiding geocaches in the ground is a normal procedure. Most people use plastic bags inside metal lunch boxes, but a plastic tube will not rust and decompose. A plastic tube made of PVC and sealed at the ends with twist on caps, will hold a geocache logbook and a small item. Burying the tube in the ground or under a rock will not destroy the tube. It can also be placed inside the hollow of a tree.
Plastic Bottles
A plastic bottle is easily decorated in a multitude of themes. Using plastic bottles, such as a 2-liter or 20-ounce soda bottle, a continuing theme can be created for a series of caches. A theme is a series of caches that look alike, such as an alien theme or a rabbit theme. Remember to keep decorations appropriate for the pending weather. If using felt, cloth or other perishable decorations, place the cache inside a make-shift shelter created by rocks or the hollow of a tree.
