Good Ways to Get Autographs

Celebrities are often appreciative of their fans because without the fans, they wouldn't be where they are. When you're a fan of a specific celebrity, you can use perseverance to get that person's autograph. Whether it's a sports star, actor or musician, it is usually possible to get that person to sign something for you. Once you start getting autographs, you may even get the bug and start a collection of signed memorabilia.
  1. Through the Mail

    • Writing and sending letters to your favorite celebrities is a simple way to get back autographs. The trick is to send the letter to an endorsed location, such as the set of a TV show, the person's agent or the celebrity's specific fan club. Depending on the celebrity, it might take a few weeks or years before you hear something back. Celebrities that are more famous and work more often take longer to send back a response. You should also include a self-addressed stamped envelope for the processor to mail back a photo.

    In Person

    • Athletes often participate in sanctioned events, where fans get the chance to meet them. NASCAR drivers, for example, host meet-and-greets with fans during sanctioned events at the track. Consider joining a celebrity's fan club, as you gain access to information about upcoming meet-and-greets. When you attend a sanctioned event, the athlete often has small cards or photos on hand to sign, but you can also bring your own memorabilia. Keep in mind that some charge a fee to sign things, while others charge a fee to buy photos and other merchandise for signing.

    Tips for Mail Success

    • When writing a letter to a celebrity, be as polite and nice as possible. Explain why you're writing the letter, what you like about the person, and give some feedback about how you first started following the individual's career. If you include a specific item for the person to sign, then explain why you chose that item. For memorabilia, purchase a pre-paid box or similar item, which makes it easy for the person to ship the signed piece back to you.

    Warning

    • Celebrities are real people and do not like being interrupted during everyday activities. Use caution if you run across a celebrity grocery shopping, playing with her kids or eating dinner. The person might react negatively to your interruption and even refuse to sign an autograph.
