How to Get Rid of Newspaper Boxes

Newspaper boxes are disappearing from corners all over America as more and more newspapers are forced to stop printing. Sometimes the publishers fail to pick up the newspaper boxes, leaving an empty eyesore on the street corner, or unused boxes are left to collect dust in someone's home. If you need to get rid of an old newspaper box, there are several options. You can also consider reusing the item and turning it into something more useful.

Instructions

    • 1

Call of the newspaper publisher that previously filled the box and request that it be removed. If the item is in your home and hasn't been used by the publisher in some time, you must use another option to get rid of it.

    • 2

Offer the newspaper box to collectors. Many people collect these items and will pay money for it. You can place the item for sale or give it away on websites like eBay, Craigslist, Freecycle or through your local newspaper.

    • 3

Recycle the old newspaper box. Often these boxes are made of metal and can be recycled at your local recycling facility. Remove the plastic or glass window first and dispose of this in your trash bin. Then take the remaining parts to the recycler. The facility will charge a fee to recycle the item. Contact your local waste management company to find out where recycling facilities are located.

    • 4

Donate or sell the old newspaper box to a thrift or antique store. Many antique stores will purchase items like this to resell for collectors. If you can't find a buyer, donate the item to a thrift store.

    • 5

Reuse the newspaper box rather than get rid of it. Open the door of the box and fill the inside with dirt, plant flowers in it and use it as a planter. Paste stickers on the box advertising a free book exchange, place the item in front of your home or business and allow community members to place books inside to give away for free. Turn the box into a different kind of dispenser. For example, a church can use it to distribute the Sunday newsletter or an artist can place his CDs for sale in the box. Or stuff the box full of junk and use it as a storage container.
