Smell a variety scented candles. Compare the scents to make sure you find one that is pleasing to you.
Look at the candles. Choose an appropriate color to match your surroundings if you plan to use the scented candle as part of your decorative scheme. Opt for a neutral color such as white or tan if you intend to move a candle from room to room. Choose a candle that can be placed into a holder if the color does not match your decor.
Determine the type of wax used to make the scented candle. Choose one made of soy rather than paraffin wax. Soy is natural and biodegradable, while paraffin wax is a petroleum product that produces soot and carcinogens.
Pay attention to how scents affect the body. For example, chamomile oil can help you sleep; citronella can help relieve a headache; eucalyptus can clear your sinuses; rose essential oil can relieve symptoms of depression; myrrh essential oil can relieve pain associated with a toothache or dry skin; ginger oil can alleviate nausea; and cypress oil can reduce sweating.
