Purpose
Keepsake boxes are generally purchased, or received as gifts, to hold special pieces of memories and items. People often use them to hold jewelry, pictures or whatever type of memorabilia they want to store and look at in the future. They are also often used to store mementos relating to a special event in life, such as the birth of a baby. Keepsake boxes can be used to store whatever items the owner decides to place in them.
Structure
A keepsake box can be made of any type of material. They are commonly made of wood, but many are made from metal or plastic. Any type of box can virtually be used as a memory box. Many people make their own keepsake boxes out of things such as cigar or pencil boxes. Smaller keepsake boxes are often used for jewelry, while larger boxes may be used to store mementos from a person's baby.
Gifts
Many people give keepsake boxes as gifts for weddings, the birth of a child or a special day such as Father's Day or Mother's Day. Places that sell keepsake boxes often offer the option of having the box engraved. This creates a more personal gift for the recipient. Common things engraved on a keepsake box are the names of newlyweds, the name of a new child or an anniversary date. Keepsake boxes are commonly given as anniversary gifts as well. To celebrate a second or 20th anniversary, it is appropriate to give porcelain keepsake boxes. Wood boxes are appropriate for fifth and sixth year anniversaries and crystal is often given to celebrate third and 15th year anniversaries.
Details
Sometimes keepsake boxes contain a lock on the front, allowing the owner to keep the valuable treasures locked away. Other keepsake boxes may also be combined with music boxes, which allow music to be played when the box is open and wound.
