The Company
Swarovski is an Austrian company founded in 1895. Swarovski operates throughout the globe and has production centers in 18 countries including the United States, Austria, Brazil, the Czech Republic, Germany, France, Switzerland and Turkey. Swarovski products are shipped and sold internationally through Swarovski stores and licensed resellers.
Daniel Swarovski
Company founder Daniel Swarovski was born in Bohemia -- now the Czech Republic -- in 1862. In 1892, Swarovski invented a machine that significantly improved the precision and quality of cut crystal. Prior to the invention of this machine, crystal cutting had been done manually. In 1895, Swarovski started his company in Wattens, Tyrol. His motto for the company -- which is still used today -- was: "To constantly improve what is good."
Crystal Figures/Figurines
Swarovski crystals are fine-cut and, accordingly, are well-suited for figures and figurines. Pieces often come in the form of an animal, and some popular choices include elephants, bears and birds. Some are released as limited collector's editions depending on the type of edition, and these pieces might or might not be signed by the artist -- using a laser signature -- depending on the particular edition. Some limited editions feature runs of 200 or fewer pieces and restricted sales. For instance, some pieces are only available to Swarovksi Crystal Society members. The price of a figure or figurine can range from $25 to more than $5,000.
Other Crystal Products
While Swarovski is best known for its fine-cut crystal figures and figurines, the company produces several products using its crystals. Other crystal items include chandeliers for home and commercial use, fine jewelry, watches, sunglasses and home accessories including pens, card holders, ornaments and stemware.
