Snow Globe Components

More than a Christmas tradition, snow globes have become favored collectibles that evoke a feeling of nostalgia. Whether serving as a reminder of a childhood or vacation memory or simply a knick-knack to display, snow globes are available in almost every gift shop, tourist locale and collectible store. Known by many different names around the world, snow globes are comprised of the same basic parts.
  1. Globe

    • The globe houses the focal point, which is usually a ceramic figurine. Traditionally made out of glass, less expensive globes feature a plastic covering instead. The globe also holds the water and snow that it is named after.

    Base

    • Snow globe base styles vary similarly to globe style, but the base is any bottom that serves as a stand for all the other components. The figurine focal point is glued to the top of the base, and in more expensive and extravagant globes, the base houses a key and music box.

    Focal Point

    • The focal point is generally a ceramic figurine mounted to the base. Other focal points could include a photograph, or a plastic scene. The focal point is the image or object being snowed upon.

    Snow

    • These are the flakes that are shaken throughout the water globe to produce the snowing effect. Sometimes replaced with glitter, the flakes are what make the snow globe whimsical. The flakes are light enough to float elegantly throughout the water, but heavy enough to remain settled when the globe is standing still.

    Water

    • Water is filled into the globe top to allow the flakes to float throughout the scenery of the globe.
