How to Grade Old Coke Bottles

Coca-Cola has been selling soda since the late 1800s and has traditionally used a glass bottle to package the drink. The product was first sold from a fountain in a drugstore and later bottled for mobility. A unique contoured bottle was designed and used to separate it from competition. These bottles have become collectible items and are graded based on their condition. The grading scale goes from the lowest quality, 1, to the highest, 10. Bottles are graded for purposes of valuation.

Instructions

    • 1

Assess your Coke bottles from all angles. Check which bottle looks to be in the worst condition and which one appears to be in the best shape. If the bottle is broken or scratched beyond recognition, grade it at a 1. If the Coke bottle is full, has no damage, looks brand-new and is in its original packaging, grade it at a 10.

    • 2

Place the grade 1 bottles on the left side of a table and the grade 10 bottles on the right side. Use these as guides to classify all the other Coke bottles. Place the remaining bottles anywhere in between the 1s and 10s, based on their condition.

    • 3

Compare your grading with others. Find a local Coke bottle collector or dealer and show them your collection. Discuss the quality and grades of your Coke bottles and look at their collection. Adjust your grades accordingly.
