How to Keep Rubber Bands

Rubber bands come in handy on a regular basis. Whether you're rolling up a newspaper, wrapping one over your wrist as a reminder or holding together index cards for a presentation, rubber bands should never be far away. Rubber bands tend to lose their elasticity, becoming hard and brittle, as they age. To help rubber bands keep their elasticity, store them correctly. Then, when you reach for a loop of rubber, it'll be usable and flexible.

  Separate your rubber bands by color and width.

  Place bands of the same width and color in separate areas of a plastic container.

  Take out as many rubber bands as you'll use in a month, and transfer them, still sorted, to a smaller container. You also can loop them on a paper towel roll for easy access and a colorful display piece.

  Place the larger container in the refrigerator. The cold and lack of air will help the rubber bands stay stretchy longer.
