How to Cycle for Charity

When deciding to cycle for a charity, you will have to consider whether you want to start your own campaign or join one that is already established. The greatest chance of success lies in joining a charity biking group that has experience raising money. These groups already have a route, they often have means to carry your gear; and support, accommodations and food are usually paid for. You could, however, start your own ride, and this is sometimes necessary if you are cycling for a cause that is not well-known.

Instructions

  1. Established Ride

    • 1

Register for a ride that is already put on by a nonprofit society.

    • 2

      Receive the fund-raising material.

    • 3

Ask for sponsors by calling people or by going door-to-door. Start by asking people you know.

    • 4

Purchase any necessary equipment -- a bicycle, helmet and padded bike shorts -- if you don't already own them.

    • 5

Train for the ride by biking and eating healthy meals. A high protein diet will help you build muscles and long training rides will build your stamina.

    Independent Campaign

    • 6

Contact the charity you want to raise the money for and attain any fund-raising materials they have.

    • 7

Plan your route. Arrange for travel, food and accommodations. Prepare to pay for many of the expenses yourself.

    • 8

Call friends and family to see if they want to participate. This will also increase the amount of money you can raise, as they will take part in attaining additional funds.

    • 9

Contact your federal government for tax receipts so you can give one to each donor if the charity doesn't have them for you. The government office will want the carbon copy of each receipt, and you will have to provide documentation about where the money has gone.
