How to Collect Bibles

In the world of book collecting, Bible collection holds a special appeal. A spiritual lexicon for Christianity, a history book, a book for holding family records, and often beautifully bound, the Bible makes a popular book for researching and collection. Collecting Bibles is a fairly simple and rewarding process, provided you do a little research.

  1. Collecting Bibles

Gather information about Bible collecting before you begin your collection. Speak to other, more knowledgeable Bible and book collectors. Research the printing history of the Bible on websites such as Clausenbooks.com, and learn what drives a Bible's value in the marketplace. If possible, speak with a collector who specializes in Bibles to determine what you will need to know in order to begin your collection. Browse the Internet for collectors' groups and forums, along with informational pages written by experts and collectors to help you learn as much as you can before you begin investing in your collection. Some websites to help begin your search include www.biblecollectors.org, the International Bible Collector's website, and www.collectorsweekly.com, which offers an online publication, as well as a print magazine.

Make arrangements to view various Bibles. Visit your local Christian bookstore to see newer printings of Bibles, and, if possible, visit antique book dealers to see antique Bibles. Ask questions, handle the books, and determine what types of Bibles you would prefer to collect.

    • 3

Purchase Bibles for your collection. Bibles can be found online, in antique bookstores, in Christian bookstores, thrift shops, and even garage and estate sales. Typically, newer Bibles tend to sell for less than antique Bibles, so bear that in mind as you make your purchases. For more expensive purchases, consider having the Bible inspected by an expert or acquiring certificates of authenticity.

Display your collection. The Bibles in your collection, regardless of age, will need to be stored and cared for properly. Older or more delicate Bibles should be stored behind glass. All Bibles should be kept in a cool, dry room and should be dusted or wiped clean with a soft cloth frequently. Your collection should not be subjected to direct sunlight, as this could yellow or damage pages, bindings and leather.
