The Proper Way to Fill a Zippo Lighter

Zippo is an American company based in Pennsylvania that have been making refillable lighters since 1933. The design used was inspired by an Austrian lighter company, although now the name Zippo has become synonymous with lighters which can be refilled with lighter fluid. Refilling a Zippo is a very simple task that takes only a couple of minutes and will save you having to purchase disposable lighters.

Zippo lighter
Lighter fluid

Instructions

  Open the lid of the lighter to expose the top of the mechanism, which includes the flint wheel and wick.

  Pull out the mechanism. This may be quite tightly held in the case, but is designed to come out so do not be afraid to use a bit of force.

  Turn the mechanism upside down to expose the white cotton which holds the lighter fluid.

  Pull up the nozzle of the lighter fluid tin and place it into the hole in the cotton on the bottom of the mechanism.

  Squeeze the lighter fluid tin so fluid starts pouring into the cotton. Stop when the fluid starts to come up through the cotton.

  Place the mechanism back into the casing. It may take a minute for the lighter fluid to seep into the wick, making the Zippo light.
