How to Fuel a Zippo Cotton Lighter

The classic Zippo lighter has been around since 1933 when George Blaisdell took an idea from an Australian lighter and redesigned it into what we know today as the Zippo windproof lighter. It's been through World War II, Korea, Vietnam and the Gulf Wars and has been the favorite of generations of GIs. The lighter has not changed significantly over the years, and neither has the way that it is filled.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the lid of the lighter and remove the inside of the lighter.

    • 2

Pull the felt pad aside to expose the cotton packing

    • 3

Slowly fill the lighter with fluid until the fluid reaches the top of the packing. Do not overfill or the excess fluid will leak out. If you overfill, shale the excess onto a paper towel and dispose of the towel properly.

    • 4

Replace the insert in the lighter case and wipe away any spilled fluid before lighting the lighter
