How to Chase Fireflies With Kids

Fireflies are a type of beetle that produces light. Most common in Asia and more temperate climates, they are often spotted on humid nights throughout the summer months. Children love chasing fireflies and capturing the fascinating insect for a short time, and you too can join them.

Instructions

    • 1

Wait until dusk, when the sun begins to set, and go outside.

    • 2

Find the area in which fireflies are most likely to surface. They like to hide in wooded and grass-covered areas, such as fields, gardens and groups of trees.

    • 3

Look for tiny blinking lights. As the night gets darker, they will be easier to spot.

    • 4

When you see a firefly, chase after it and put a butterfly net over it. You may even catch one with your hands.

    • 5

Place the firefly in a clear jar. With each one that you catch, the jar will become brighter.

    • 6

Release the fireflies back into the night.
