Money
Searching through coins to find the exact one may take a considerable amount of time. Looking for items such as a 1999 penny or 2004 quarter may seem like small, easy things to find, but when including a specific date, what first seems easy turns to difficult.
Unseasonal Items
Throw scavenger hunters off their game by asking for items that aren't in season: find a Christmas plate in the middle of June or ask for a pirate beach towel in the middle of winter. Children may have a difficult time finding unseasonal items, but adults will accept the challenge. Ask for easier seasonal related items with children, such as an autumn colored leaf near the beginning of August or an artificial flower in April.
Pictures
Pictures are a common item in scavenger hunts because the possibilities are endless. Ask hunters to locate a ordinary item such as a picture of a family or harder items, such as a picture of a boat on a lake. Sometimes, the simplest pictures, such as a picture of a dog, are the hardest to find. Hunters will be able to locate the pictures by looking through old and current magazines and newspapers.
Everyday Items
Everyday items should be random and unexpected. These items may include ketchup, a sand shovel, rubber bands, a marble and business cards. When making a list, include several random items that are unrelated to each other. The point is to have hunters race from area to area to locate the items requested.
