How to Mount a Hygrometer in a Humidor

Cigars must be stored in a humidor to keep them near room temperature and moist, otherwise they can become dry and frail. If this occurs, they need to be re-humidified. This can cause a sudden change in conditioning and result in the wrapper becoming unbound, which is commonly referred to as "blowing up." To avoid this, a humidifier must have a functioning hygrometer to measure humidity levels.

Things You'll Need

  • Hygrometer
  • Humidifier
  • Clean sponge
  • Distilled water

Instructions

    • 1

Unpack the hygrometer and pull the plastic strip out of the battery compartment. Let the hygrometer sit in the dark for about 2 hours to calibrate. Keep the room temperature between 72 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • 2

Wipe the inside lid of the humidor with a clean cloth to remove any dust. Pull the adhesive protective strip from the back of the hygrometer to expose the Velcro strip. Firmly press the detached Velcro strip against the lid of the humidor. Let the Velcro strip sit for about 8 to 10 hours to adhere to the humidor lid in the dark at the same temperature range mentioned in Step 1.

    • 3

Wipe down the inside of the humidor with distilled water with a clean sponge. Close it for a period of 3 to 4 hours and then open it for at least 1 hour to let any glue fumes dissipate from the joints. Wipe it down again with distilled water and let it stand for 1 day.

    • 4

Affix the hygrometer to the Velcro strip. Soak the humidifier in distilled water for about 3 to 5 minutes. Place the humidifier in the humidor and close the humidor again. The humidity will level out in 24 to 48 hours and will be ready to store cigars.
