How to Collect Whiskey Stoneware & China

Whiskey stoneware and china are types of whiskey or spirit bottles produced before the 1920s. According to Collectors Weekly, whiskey was not bottled until 1846. The most collectible stoneware and china whiskey bottles are those made between 1846 and 1919.

Instructions

    • 1

Look at the design of the bottle. Whiskey was not the only drink bottled in stoneware. Other drinks -- including gin and wine -- were bottled in stoneware during the same period. The shape of the bottle is often the determining factor. Whiskey bottles usually have a large bottom, one small handle at the top and a small bottle top; this gives the bottle a stumpy or stout appearance. Stoneware and china whiskey jugs look similar to thick porcelain.

    • 2

Look for the whiskey company logo or name on the bottle. This typically gives an indication of the year the bottle was made. The company name often affects the value of the stoneware.

    • 3

Determine the year of the bottle. The year is sometimes written near the company logo, or it might not have a listed year. Look up the company matching the logo if the bottle lacks a listed year. This often provides a range of years. According to Anttax, older jugs frequently feature hidden signatures in the base of the jug.

Purchase jugs online, at live auctions or from an antique store. The online purchase is convenient, but the odds are good you might receive the wrong item or a duplicate. Live auctions featured noted data with the jug. This give a better idea of value, but increases price competition. Antique stores might have minimal data, but allow for personal examination. Build up your collection slowly, and purchase quality pieces.
