How to Prep an Epoxy Knife Handle

Using epoxy as a joint compound in a knife raises some questions. Epoxy is inefficient at temperatures above 70 F. Exposure to grease, oil, fat and food particles create a bacteria-infeasted environment. The blade on a knife is a conductor for heat. It often loosens, creating a gap between the blade and the handle grip.

Instructions

    • 1

Take apart the knife handle; look for areas where rust and dirt have collected. The tang blade might have corrosion and build-up from dirt and food. The tang of the blade fits into the handle.

    • 2

Scrape the inside of the knife handle with a chisel. Wash the wood inside the handle with warm, soapy water; sand it down with fine-grit sandpaper. Scrape, wash and sand the tang.

    • 3

Re-drill the knife handle under a drill press. Check the fit of the old rivets. Fill gaps with epoxy.

    • 4

Prepare the epoxy knife-handle for reassembly. Set the pieces on a dry, clean piece of plywood. Epoxy applied on paper or cloth will interfere with the reassembly of the knife handle if spillage occurs.
