How to Find Semiprecious Stones

Semiprecious stones or gems are defined as pieces of mineral that, when cut and polished, form beautiful jewels often used in jewelry-making. The difference between "semiprecious" and "precious" gemstones has more to do with historical context than actual value, according to All About Gemstones. For example, amethyst, which was once grouped with precious stones such as rubies, emeralds and sapphires, is now considered semiprecious due to the jewel's abundance. Find out where semiprecious stones occur naturally or browse assorted flea markets and online resources.

Instructions

    • 1

Browse flea markets, yard sales, craft shows, consignment, local jewelry stores and pawn shops for jewelry containing semiprecious stones. Flea markets, consignment shops and garage sales are good resources for finding used (or new) jewels, and generally you can haggle to get the price you want. Pawn shops often receive large quantities of jewelry which they then sell cheaply. Browse craft shows for jewelry designs that use semiprecious stones in their creations, though such jewelry is often more expensive because it is handmade.

    • 2

Search through online gem distributors such as Semi Precious, Vita Beads and Meijer for easy access to large collections. Meijer includes a buying guide on its site, while Vita Beads offers gems wholesale.

    • 3

Research mines and parks in your area that allow panning for gems, such as Penn's Cave and Wildlife Park in Pennsylvania. Look up areas/regions where the semiprecious gemstone in question occurs naturally. For example, places to find pearls in the U.S. include rivers in Florida, California and Delaware as well as the Mississippi River. Find jadeite in areas of Alaska and California, and amethyst in South Carolina.
