How to Identify Woodworking Tools

Woodworking tools are common with trade workers and have become popular collector's items. Many of these tools can be found at garage sales, old barns and workshops. Sometimes, it can be difficult to identify the tool you are looking for to complete your project or finish your collection. Research is a value skill to possess to understand and identify the tools you require.

  Examine the tool. Figure out its function. Most tools are easily identified such as hammers, saws and screwdrivers. Once the function is discovered such as boring, cutting or edging tools, it will be easier to research once you have categorized it.

  Identify the manufacturer. When examining the tool, check the body for engravings, patent numbers or logos.

  Ask the manufacturer about the tool in the question. However, if the tool is found at a garage sale, speak with the owner. He/she should be able to provide you with details to help identify the tool. If you are a collector, the owner may be able to provide you with some history on the item.

  Share your tool with experts. Bring the tool to a workshop or hardware store to find out more information and ask questions. Also there are many online forums where you can find out more about how to identify woodworking tools.

  Research the logos, patent numbers or engravings found on the tool. Some manufacturers' sites are categorized by the tools they produce. Visit the library and find books on the subject. Most websites and books offer photos of the tools so you can compare.
