How to Collect Split Bamboo Fly Rods

Split bamboo rods have a long history dating back to the 1800s where, according to Fly Fishing History, it was a "four-section split-cane tip sections made from planed and glued cane, wrapped with silk." The split rod is a collectible. Following a few tips, you can add some treasured split bamboo rods to your collection.

  Look for split bamboo rods made by specific companies; These companies are known for the quality of their bamboo rods which can truly be an important part of your collection. The companies to look for are Thomas, Phillipson, Hardy and Granger.

  Examine the length. The length of the split bamboo fly rod can determine its value. Generally speaking, the more valuable rods are in the 6-feet to 8-feet lengths.

  Check the condition of the rod. If the rod is intact, you will have to pay more. Generally speaking, a rod with a broken tip will not be acceptable.
