Pewter Button Identification

Collecting buttons is becoming increasingly popular. While some are more valuable than others, it's often hard to detect what material buttons are made from. However, knowing the material is often key to interpreting the button's value.
  1. Pewter

    • Pewter is primarily made from tin, although it contains elements of lead, copper, bismuth and antimony. While it's commonly used to make tableware and decorative items that may appear around the house, pewter buttons are considered valuable collectibles throughout the world.

    Identification

    • Identify pewter buttons through their initial light and glossy appearance, although their silver tint tends to turn gray once the metal oxidizes if the pewter contains lead. Look for various carved and embossed patterns, which are easily applied to pewter because of the metal's ability to be shaped and manipulated.

    Value

    • Pewter was of great value in the Middle Ages, proving to be one of the largest exports in England. While pewter buttons are affordable, other pewter items continue to vary in price.
