Wooden German Toys of the 1980s

Wooden toys were all the rage in the 1980s, when many manufacturers favored the higher quality and durability of wood over other production materials. In the '90s, many manufacturers switched to plastic as their primary production material. A number of the German toys from the '80s are now highly sought-after collectors items.
  1. Wooden Railroads

    • German wooden train rails gained popularity in the 80's.

In 1980, the German toy manufacturer T.C. Timber Company became famous for its production of miniature wooden railroads. The wooden track featured an interlocking system of individual pieces, which allowed for an infinite number of unique configurations and lengths. Wooden train wheels were designed to fit just inside the raised sides of wooden tracks to keep them from derailing.

    Nutcrackers

    • German wooden nutcracker figurines from the '80s are now collectibles.

German toy makers are famous for their nutcracker figurines, commonly given as gifts during the Christmas season. Steinbach Open Series Nutcracker toys were released in the early '80s, featuring characters engaged in various occupations. The Woodcarver, the Apotheker (Pharmacist) and the Toy Maker are all highly collectible items on the collectors market today.

    Schleich Farm Series

    • Around 1986, the famous Schleich toy company added wooden animals and farm accessories to its extensive line of figurines. These carved animals are noted for being lifelike and finely crafted. The Big Red Barn is one of the most recognized Schleich products of the '80s. The Schleich Farm Series is still in high demand with collectors today.
