How to Clean Lansky Sharpening Stones

Sharpening stones, also called whet stones, are artificial and natural stones that are used to sharpen and hone metal implements. Lansky sharpening stones have guide bars cut into the stone to guide the user to a proper sharpening angle. As objects are sharpened, pieces of the stone may break off and begin to clog the pores of the stone. This will prevent the stone from working as effectively. To prevent the pores from clogging, the stone should be cleaned after each use.

Instructions

    • 1

Feel the surface of the stone. A smooth stone indicates that the grit has been covered by displaced stone and metal fragments. Also feel for any cracks or chips in the surface of the stone.

    • 2

Soak the stone in warm water for fifteen minutes. This will facilitate cleaning by opening the pores of the stone.

    • 3

Scrub the stone with a toothbrush. The bristles of the toothbrush will displace dust and other debris from the small pores of the stone.

    • 4

Wipe the surface of the stone with a rag.

    • 5

Dry the stone before your next use.
