Steuben Glass Works
In 1903, glass designer Frederick Carder and New York glass cutting factory owner Thomas G. Hawkes partnered to start the Steuben Glass Works. The partnership designed and produced several line of glass products.
Carder Designs
Chief designer Carder developed "Aurene," an iridescent glass that rivaled the darker iridescent "Favrile" glass produced by Tiffany &Company. Carder's classical style is reflected in over 5,000 shapes, and some 60 designs and colors during a 30- year career with Steuben.
Steuben Collectibles
In 1943, the last colored glass pieces of Steuben glass were produced. Clear crystal glass items have been designed and produced by Steuben artisans under ownership of Corning Glass Works' Steuben division.
Famous Ties
Artists including Georgia O'Keefe, Salvador Dali and Henri Matisse collaborated with Steuben in 1940 for an exhibition of engraved glass objects at the company's Fifth Avenue store. President and Mrs. Harry Truman gave Steuben plates, designed with James Audubon drawings, as a wedding gift to the future Queen Elizabeth.
