Hammers and Saws
Ancient Native American hammers did not resemble modern day hammers as they appeared more like stone blocks. They did not usually have handles and were made from stone. Indian saws also were made from stone and had serrated edges similar to the modern day saw.
Knives and Axes
The indigenous people of the Americas not only used stone to create knives, but also used animal teeth, bones and shells, when available. The axes were fashioned from plain, polished or grooved stone. The axes, which were designed in different sizes, shapes and weights, were used for everyday tasks and in ceremonial dances.
Arrowheads
Arrowheads of many colors and sizes are one of the most commonly found Indian tools. Arrowheads were traditionally made from stone; however, some were actually carved from wood. It was not uncommon for wooden arrowheads to be fashioned with a stone tip, making them more durable for hunting.
Ice Picks
Ancient Native American ice picks are a rare archeological find. These tools were made from stone and used to break holes into ice-covered lakes, allowing the people to get water for drinking as well as to fish. Ancient ice picks were very large and heavy tools.
Mortar and Pestle
The ancient Native American mortar and pestle tools were used for grinding foods, such as acorns. Other tools used for preparing meals included "flatbread" processing stones, baking stones and ball pestles.
