How Do I Fix Zippos?

Zippo lighters were designed to be easier to use and stay lit in poor conditions better than other lighters. Zippos were first created in 1932 and are built to be durable, although you will need to maintain and fix your lighter from time to time.
  1. Refuel

    • Regular lighters usually use some kind of lighter fluid, while Zippo lighters use butane. They are built with the ability to be refilled once the butane is gone. Zippo recommends they be refilled using Zippo brand butane. Turn the lighter upside down and insert the nozzle of the butane can into the hole. Press the nozzle down a few times, releasing the fuel into the lighter.

    Replace The Flint

    • When the flint on your Zippo goes out, it will have trouble creating a spark and keeping the flame lit. To replace the flint, turn the lighter upside-down and remove the small screw at the bottom. Pull the flint wheel out of the top of the lighter. Place a new flint into the lighter and into the tube in the middle. Replace the screw tightly.

    Vapor Lock

    • Vapor lock happens when you refuel your Zippo improperly. This allows air inside your lighter instead of butane. The lighter will not light or spark. Press a small screwdriver into the valve in the bottom of the lighter, draining all of the air out. Be careful to point the lighter away from your face.

    Contact Zippo

    • Contact Zippo for a free replacement or repair. They guarantee any lighter will be repaired regardless of age or condition. Mail your lighter off following the instructions for repair listed on their website.
