How to Determine Age of Hummels

The German porcelain factory W. Goebel Porzellanfabrik creates and produces Hummel figurines. It originally used the designs of a Franciscan nun named Maria Innocentia Hummel, who worked with Goebel's sculptors and painters to produce the first figurines in 1935 and collaborated with Goebel until her death in 1946, according to art historian Dr. Lori, director of Masterpiece Technologies, Inc. Goebel continues to produce Hummel figurines to this day.

Instructions

    • 1

Print out a reference guide of Hummel markings from the website Antique HQ or Online Collectibles. Read through the descriptions of the Goebel trademarks and date stamps. The trademark design determines the figurine's age.

    • 2

Find the Goebel trademark by turning your Hummel figurine over and checking the underside. Every authentic M. I. Hummel has an official Goebel trademark on its underside. The trademark's design has varied since 1935.

    • 3

Compare the trademark on the underside of your Hummel to the trademarks in the reference guide. Match your Hummel's trademark to one under a year or year range. From the design of your Hummel's trademark, you will know when it was made.
