According to the United States Department of Agriculture, potatoes lead the vegetable crop sales in the United States. As of October 2010, potato sales average 15 percent of all farm vegetable sales. Farmers and the USDA sell potatoes in sacks that -- when filled -- weigh 50 pounds.

- The USDA sells, ships and trades potatoes from across the nation in 50-pound sacks. The USDA then releases a report once every two weeks stating the price paid per 50-pound sack.
Price
- The price of potatoes fluctuates throughout the year. The price will vary based on the type of potato and the location of the sale. According to the October 19, 2010, report by the USDA, a 50-pound sack of white potatoes sold for $10 each in Idaho County, Oregon, including broker fees.

- According to the USDA, in the 1960's the average person consumed 110 pounds of potatoes per year. The USDA reports that as of October 2010 the average person consumes 130 pounds of potatoes.
