List of U.S. Navy Ship Crests

The U.S. Navy is one of the largest surface and subsurface fleets in the world. Ships of all classes and sizes are strategically positioned in waters home and abroad. The fleet consists of aircraft carriers, amphibious assault ships, battleships, cruisers, frigates, destroyers, submarines and smaller vessels including mine hunters and fast patrol boats. Each vessel is presented with a crest that represents various motto's and battle honors.
  1. U.S.S. Anzio

    • The U.S.S. Anzio is a is a Ticonderoga Class guided missile cruiser, named after the amphibious assault on the beachhead at Anzio, Italy, on January 22, 1944, during World War II. The ship's crest consists of an anchor, portraying strength, a blue ribbon that acknowledges the 22 Medals of Honor won at Anzio; the words "Honor, Integrity, Heart" which are traits expected of crew members; the Aegis radar's octagonal shape represents weaponry and technology; the eagle wings represent the first Anzio ship and the attributes of America's national emblem, "vigilance, preparedness and courage." The red and white shield in the center of the crest symbolizes the sacrifice of those who fell at Anzio. The shield also includes a rose, maple leaf and eagle that honors the forces of Great Britain, Canada and the United States.

    U.S.S. New York

    • The U.S.S. New York is a San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ship. It is the sixth U.S.S. Navy ship to be named after the Great State of New York. The crest consists of seven rays of sunlight to signify the crown on the Statue of Liberty and the seven seas. The Twin Towers are represented by two silver pillars within the crest shield. The ship's bow was forged from the towers' steel. A phoenix at the center of the shield bears the colors of first responders to the disaster, from the New York Police Department, New York Fire Department and Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Drops of blood on the colors represents those department personnel who fell that day. Three stars within the shield represent battle honors won at Iwo Jima, Okinawa and North Africa during World War II.

    U.S.S. Iwo Jima

    • The U.S.S. Iwo Jima is a Wasp-class amphibious assault ship named after the Pacific island which was the scene of ferocious battles during World War II. The ship is the second vessel to carry the name. The shield within the crest consists of three spearheads representing the amphibious triad of the landing craft air cushion, the amphibious assault vehicle and the V-22 Osprey tilt rotor aircraft. Light blue shades in the shield represents the seas of the world. A white disc with the Hero's boiler reflects the fact the ship was one of the last ships propelled by steam boilers. The attacking osprey outside the shield symbolizes the V-22 Osprey tilt rotor aircraft. Palm fronds on either side of the osprey represent the previous U.S.S. Iwo Jima and its service during the Vietnam war.
