How to Buy Japanese Swords

Japanese swords are great works of art which are sought-after collectibles. The traditional swords are individually made, each blade is different. Sword-smiths typically signed their swords, but the style of each smith is personal. As the sword-smiths are well known and did not make a large number of swords, each sword can be documented and assessed.

It is possible to buy new swords, but it is the old swords which are collectible. In the U.S. a large number of swords were imported after World War II, often as trophies. When these come on the market, it is possible to find unique objects at bargain prices.

Instructions

    • 1

Read up on Japanese swords and swordmaking. There are several books and online resources available. Attend lectures by experts, and visit museums to build knowledge prior to buying the sword.

    • 2

Find a show where Japanese swords are displayed.

Swords are often shown by members of the Japanese sword appreciation societies at shows around the U.S. (chapters of the the Japanese Sword Society of the United States), or at gun shows.

    • 3

Practice the established etiquette when viewing the displayed swords (see References).

Wait until the previous person has finished watching the sword, and do not make comments about the sword until holding it. Be careful not to touch the blade with your fingers.

    • 4

Decide on a sword. Ask to see the documentation, if available.

    • 5

Negotiate a price, but be aware of the range which you should pay for the sword.
