How to Identify Hull Little Red Riding Hood Cookie Jars

Manufactured by Hull Pottery, authentic Little Red Riding Hood cookie jars are a rare find. Sought after by collectors, the jars have a high price tag and are collected for fun and for future investments. Many reproductions and fakes litter the Internet by the thousands, but Hull marked each Little Red Riding Hood cookie jar on the bottom to guarantee authenticity. Hull produced several different variations and styles making it difficult to identify an authentic Little Red Riding Hood cookie jar. Before purchasing a jar, learn how to identify a fake and what makes one authentic.

Check the bottom of the jar for authenticity. It should be marked '967 Hull Ware Little Red Riding Hood Patent Applied for USA.' Reproductions are marked similarly with added numbers or a single word or words. Check the dress for poinsettias, poppies, red over-spray on the hem, or gold trim. The original cookie jar has an open basket, which Red is holding. Hull also made a closed basket design and dress designs that vary with numerous decals.

Check the height of the jar. Authentic jars measure approximately 13 inches high. One variety of the design is poppy flower decals. One poppy, two poppies, and three or more poppies might be on the dress. The poppy design is worth the least while the poinsettia flower decal is worth a bit more. A red over-spray on the hem of Red's dress will elevate the price a bit more, but finding a white jar trimmed in gold decals is extremely rare and could set you back a pretty penny. Many of these rare jars can cost more than $1,000.

Inspect for cracks, nicks, fading color, or any other wear and tear. The inside of the lid should be glazed and fit properly onto the jar. Open basket and closed basket jar lids cannot be interchanged as the lids will not fit correctly. Red's head is positioned differently on the open and closed basket designs. Determining value of a jar depends on the buyer. A piece is only worth as much as the buyer is willing to pay.
