What Is the Largest Paper Currency?

When considering dimensions rather than value, a Philippines banknote is the world's largest modern paper currency. According to the online edition of Time Magazine, it was created "to celebrate a century of independence from Spanish rule."
  1. Philippines 100,000 Peso

    • Time notes that a Philippines 100,000 peso banknote produced in 1998 is roughly the size of a sheet of legal paper. At his website Nutmeg Collector, paper money expert Tom Chao lists its measurements as 356 by 216 mm. Chao notes that the bill was sold only to collectors for a price exceeding its cash value.

    Ancient Chinese Paper Money

    • A close runner-up for the largest paper money is the "Da Ming Tong Xing Bao Chao" from China's Ming Dynasty, 1368 to 1644 A.D. The website Dig 4 Coins says these ancient paper bills measure 340 by 220 millimeters.

    Largest Denomination Banknote

    • In 1993, Yugoslavia produced a 500 billion dinar banknote. That's 11 zeroes! The website 3833.com says this was due to "hyperinflation" caused by rapid growth of the nation's currency without equal growth "in the output of goods and services."
