How Much Does a Bullion Weigh?

Bullion is the term used to denote uncoined precious metal. The metal can be in multiple forms, such as ingots or bars. How much bullion weighs depends on what it is made from, its size and its purity.
  1. Precious Metals

    • How precious a metal is depends on how rare it is. The rarest metals are platinum rhodium and gold. The standard unit of measurement for the weight of precious metals is the Troy ounce (ozt). 1ozt is equal to 31.1034768 grams.

    Ignots or Bars

    • Ignots or bars are solid blocks of precious metal. Ignots vary in weight a great deal. The most popular weights are 2.5, 5 and 10 grams but they can weigh hundreds of pounds.

    Bullion Trading

    • Bullion trades are based on the weight and purity of the bullion. The more it weighs, and the purer it is, the more it is worth. Gold bullion is seen as a sound investment as the price of gold has consistently risen, and is not subject to the volatility that shares in a company can have.
