Autopen Instructions

The Autopen, manufactured by Owen Mumford, LLC., is a reusable insulin pen used by people with diabetes to inject insulin into the bloodstream. After consulting a doctor, who will explain how much insulin to inject and how regularly to inject it, a patient can quickly use an Autopen at home. It is important to check that you have loaded the proper amount of insulin into your Autopen and that you properly dispose of the Autopen needle after each use.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the cap from your Autopen and unscrew the body of the pen away from the insulin-cartridge holder. The plunger must be fully retracted.

    • 2

Load the insulin cartridge into the cartridge holder. The metal cap of the cartridge is the end that should be loaded first.

    • 3

Screw the Autopen body back together with the cartridge holder.

    • 4

Adjust the dial on your Autopen to reflect the correct dosage. Double-check to ensure that the device is set to the correct dosage.

    • 5

Insert the needle into your skin the way that your doctor or nurse demonstrated.

    • 6

Push the plunger down -- toward the needle tip -- on the side of your pen and hold it in place until the dosage indicator returns to the arrow, indicating it is empty.

    • 7

Hold the needle in place for 10 seconds before removing it from your skin.

    • 8

Attach the Autopen's protective white cap to the tip of the pen and unscrew the needle from the body of the pen.

    • 9

Dispose of the needle you just used.
