Gold Recovery Tools

Gold recovery falls into two general categories, recreational and commercial. Just about anyone with an interest can prospect for gold recreationally with a few simple tools and some information. Commercial gold production is a serious investment in money and other resources but generally follows the same principles as recreational recovery. The difference is in scale of operations and production.
  1. Maps

    • In order to recover enough gold to make it worth your time, you should consult government records for geological reports and maps. Whether you are a hobbyist or a serious professional, the best place to hunt for any treasure is in historical records.

You can find gold embedded in rock or washed from where it formed millions of years ago. The first type of gold is called lode gold and the second is known as placer gold.

Long ago, miners would find placer gold and follow the trail back to the mother lode. Today, finding geographical data is not only easy but also vital.

    Wet Tools

    • A basic principle helps miners find gold by using water. Gold is heavy. A miner who is gently swirling dirt and water in a pan or watching the same material slide down a sluiceway is counting on this principle. The gold will end up in predicable areas because it takes a more water movement to push the heavier pieces than it does the lighter.

    Dry Tools

    • Over the years, landscapes change. A riverbed can dry up yet still contain the gold that washed into cracks and crevices in the riverbed. A metal detector or a method known as dry washing are the best choices here. The dry washer works on the principle that gold is heavy but uses air to pass the dry material over the sluice box. Hand bellows or a powered unit such as a leaf blower supply the air. Gold separates from other materials as it passes over the device.

    Big Tools

    • Large-scale mining operations process tons of ore to find gold. The processes are both physical and chemical. Implemented early in a treatment plan, gravity separation is the simplest procedure.

In 2010, most gold is extracted using cyanide. Machines crush the ore to the consistency of sand, mixes it with water and then adds cyanide. The gold bonds to this cyanide, allowing the mining operation to extract the gold.
