How to Light a Zippo Lighter When You Open It

The Zippo lighter was first designed in 1932 by company founder George Blaisdell, who combined a practical, wind-resistant lighter design with a durable and aesthetically pleasing look. Since then people around the world have enjoyed Zippo's unique designs, from the soldiers of World War II to the modern collector. These lighters require only lighter fluid and a little thumb power to reliably light.

Instructions

  Hold the Zippo light in your dominant hand, with the hinge facing your fingers and the opening facing your thumb.

  Flick open the top of Zippo lighter with the thumb of your dominant hand. The lighter lid will click and fall back out of the way of the flame.

  Bring your thumb down on the flint wheel and turn the wheel quickly downwards. This will create a spark, which will light the flint. The flame will grow naturally after the spark is lit.

  Blow out the flame or close the lid over the flame to extinguish the fire when you are done with the lighter.
