Instructions

    • 1

Consider the type of book you are collecting. Store heavy, over-sized, portfolio-style books flat. Store smaller, lighter books on shelves, straight and upright so the shelf supports the spine of the book on both sides.

    • 2

Make sure there is adequate space between the books on the shelf--at least enough room so the covers are not touching and the books can be removed without rubbing against one another. Don't store books too tightly on shelves or you could cause significant damage to the covers while they are sitting on the shelf and when they are removed and replaced.

    • 3

Place wall shelves or a shelving unit in a dry area away from direct sunlight. Sun can fade covers and/or pages and dampness can cause mold. When storing books on a wall shelf, make sure there is a space between the book and the wall. A shelving unit should be placed a few centimeters from the wall.

Dust your rare book collection often by lightly brushing off dust particles with a soft bristled paintbrush. Frequently dusting your books will not only keep them clean, but will prevent mildew buildup which will diminish the likelihood of pests.
