Tips on Using a Troy Shadow 3 Metal Detector

If you are a metal detecting enthusiast, your primary tool in unearthing new finds is your metal detector. Models like the Troy Shadow 3 are used to discover metal objects buried underground. Using your detector correctly could mean the difference between discovering an ancient coin hoard or walking straight over the top of it, leaving someone else to find it.
  1. Getting Started

    • When using your Shadow 3 metal detector for the first few times, you may want to change and tweak every setting you have available to you. However, to get used to how your detector works, leave the "DISC" or discrimination and "SENS" or sensitivity settings at their default positions. These are 3 and 8, respectively. Adjust the "FREQ" for frequency and "TARGET CHECK" controls to the "NORM" or normal settings.

    Battery

    • You can test the power of the battery using the battery test circuit. Wait for a few minutes after switching the detector on, then switch the "DISC" knob to the "BATT TEST" position. The battery strength is indicated by the tone emitted from the speaker. Batteries do not need to be replaced until they only produce 6 volts of power. A low-pitched tone indicates that the battery needs replacing. To save battery life, use headphones when detecting.

    Terrain

    • Your detector's performance is affected by the type of ground you are covering; however, always hold the Troy Shadow 3's coil around two to three inches above the ground and keep it level. If you are searching a saltwater shore, set the "DISC" control at 4, otherwise the saltwater can cause your detector to produce false readings.

    Deep Targets

    • When the Troy Shadow 3 detects an object at depth, it produces a weak, smooth signal. Switch to the "VCO PP"--pinpoint--mode to see whether the signal is repeatable; it will still be weak. If you get consistent signals when switching between "DISC" and "VCO PP" modes, it could mean that a metal object is buried quite deeply.
