How to Make a Metal Detector Out of a Calculator

Metal detectors use a magnetic coil that can detect metallic objects buried underground, though sometimes all you may find are bottle caps and nails. Depending on the type of detector you choose, you could end up paying a fortune. If you're just looking for a basic metal detector, you should consider making your own. An easy way to make a metal detector is by combining a calculator and a radio, and adding a handle if you prefer.

Things You'll Need

  • Broom handle
  • Small AM radio
  • Calculator (not solar-powered)
  • Duct or masking tape

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain a small radio such as an emergency radio or camping radio, and a small battery-powered calculator. Avoid solar-powered calculators because they will eventually shut down if not used for some time.

    • 2

Select AM on the radio, and turn the tuner to the highest AM channel without a broadcast. All you want to hear is static on the highest frequency.

    • 3

Place the calculator and radio back to back. Tape the calculator in position using duct or masking tape.

    • 4

Find a long stick or broom handle and tape the calculator and radio to the end of the handle. Position the calculator to be used as the metal detector by facing it toward the ground when in use.

    • 5

Turn the calculator on, and pass it over a metal object to test. You will hear a loud squelched tone from the radio in between the steady static noise as the you pass the calculator over the metal object.
