Choose a Style
Select a doll style or maker that matches the desired theme for the collection. For a high fashion mature looking doll collection, shop for molded plastic or ceramic adult style dolls . If the look for the collection is to be a younger theme, consider fully poseable plush dolls or cherubic baby dolls. Take time to select a category of dolls that is personally enjoyable before rushing into collecting.
Check out different avenues for obtaining the dolls. As a collector, it is best to find dolls that are new and sold in their original boxes. This does not mean that the dolls have to be purchased retail. Auction sites offer a low cost way to purchase the dolls. Shop garage sales and thrift shops for collectible dolls. Before purchasing a doll through any of these venues determine the price of the doll when it was new. Never pay more for the used doll than it cost new unless it is no longer being produced.
Prepare display areas for the dolls. If the dolls are to be displayed throughout the home, place shelves for the display out of the reach of children. Secure and level the shelves before placing dolls on them. Do not display a doll in direct sunlight as the light causes the doll's clothing to fade and the doll itself to deteriorate.
Keep air and dust off the dolls by storing the collection in glass or plastic storage containers. If the dolls are to be posed, pose them in closed clear containers to maintain their beauty. Once a collection reaches the point where size negates rotating the displays, store dolls in closed and sealed containers with labels noting which dolls are stored inside. Wrap the dolls in acid-free, lignin-free tissue. Papers or containers with acid cause stains and yellowing on fabrics and ceramics. Place all storage containers in a dry area out of direct sunlight. A doll collection is an investment that needs care to retain its value.
