What Is Eggshell Nautilus?

• The Homer Laughlin China Company, an enterprise founded by two brothers in the late 1800s, eventually became one of the largest producers of china in the United States. In 1927, it hired designer Frederick Hurten Rhead who would later come up with Eggshell Nautilus, the first of several eggshell designs.

Eggshell Nautilus

• The Eggshell Nautilus variety of dinnerware was produced from 1937 until its discontinuation in the 1950s. It was featured in such prominent catalogs as Montgomery Ward and Sears. Eggshell Nautilus was known for its thin edges and plain traditional shape.

Other varieties of Eggshell and Nautilus

• The year before Eggshell Nautilus was introduced, the original Nautilus style, featuring somewhat more ornate feet and handles on holloware, was in production. Different varieties of Eggshell were produced by the company as well including Georgian, Theme and Swing.
