How to Hold Collector Plates in Place on a Plate Rail

A plate rail is a simple shelf or type of decorative molding that has a lengthwise groove cut into it. A plate is displayed on a plate rail by standing it up in the groove and allowing the back of the plate to lean against the wall. While this method is functional, it is not entirely secure if the rail is in a position to be bumped or if your walls might be rattled by storms, earthquakes or strong vibrations.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a 1-inch strip of double-sided mounting tape. Peel away the paper backing and place the tape on the section of the plate that will lean against the wall.

    • 2

Align the bottom of the plate in the groove of the plate rail. Lean the plate back and gently press it against the wall so the adhesive comes into contact with the surface and the plate is securely stuck to the wall.

    • 3

Cut two small pieces of mounting tape and peel the backing from only one side of each piece. Stick the mounting tape onto the rail at each side of the plate to prevent it from rolling out of place.

    • 4

As an alternative to mounting tape, scoop out a pea-sized dot of museum wax and place it in the groove of the rail where you want your plate to rest. Put your plate in place and lightly press it into the wax. Place another small dot of wax on the back of the plate where it meets the wall for extra security.
