How to Catalogue a CD Collection

Cataloguing a CD collection can be extremely useful when looking for music with specific parameters. It can also be difficult to keep track of an entire large collection when you own a large quantity if it is not organized. If accurate records are kept and CDs are stored logically, it can eliminate the issue of not being able to find the CD you're looking for.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose the methods by which you wish to categorize your music. Common categories would be album title, musician, release date, genre and production company.

    • 2

Create an Excel spreadsheet and list your categories to sort by on the top row of the spreadsheet. If you wish to number your albums, the first column should be your numbering system.

    • 3

For each album, enter the information for that album in the row. If you choose to number your albums, label each disc and case with your number.

    • 4

Once the list is completed, sort your spreadsheet by each category and print it. This gives a list by date, musician, album, etc.

    • 5

Organize your albums following your new spread sheet by title, musician or album number on shelves or in CD folders.
