Ohio Period
The Model Flint Glass Co. was founded in 1888. The discovery of natural gas in Findlay in the 1880s motivated the glass industry to locate in the area, but by the 1890s the supply had been depleted by private companies. The colored glass from this period includes crystal, blue, amber and a rare black glass.
Albany
Indiana was the top-ranking state in the United States for total glass production in the 1890s, with Albany growing in population until the natural gas supply ran out. In 1899, Model Flint became one of 19 plants purchased by the National Glass Co., and in 1902 the plant was closed down.
Characteristics
Between 1888 and 1899, Model Flint issued pressed crystal and colored transparent glass in a variety of shades and a range of decorative effects, such as ruby and amber staining, gold flashing, etching and frosting. Early wares included a number of celery vase patterns in transparent glass, and the company also produced milk glass.
Opalescent Tableware
Prior to 1899, lighting globes and shades were the only opalescent ware issued by Model Flint. From 1899 to 1902, while in operation after its purchase by National, Model Flint Glass Works issued opalescent tableware.
