Instructions for a Kid's Metal Detector

Many children dream of finding buried treasure, though not many have ever found it in the backyard. Collecting rare metallic objects, such as coins or gold and silver relics, is a hobby for many individuals, including children. A metal detector is a perfect tool for finding these metal objects buried in the dirt or sand. Some metal detectors are quite complicated to operate even for adults. Fortunately, detectors are also produced for children to use as well and are much easier to use.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the metal detector on and put on the headphones if applicable.

    • 2

Gather up a few different metallic items, each with different metal properties. You'll need silver (a necklace or silverware), copper (penny or speaker wire), gold (a ring or necklace), a nail and aluminum items, such as bottle caps or can tabs.

    • 3

Pass each item under the detector and have your child listen to each sound the detector makes. The detector will resonate a different pitch or tone for each different metallic object.

    • 4

Set the detector to the settings that correspond to the metal that you want to look for. Note that each brand of metal detector will differ slightly with specific settings. Set the filter to filter out the items that you don't want to find, such as junk items like bottle caps or can tabs. Some basic settings are gold, silver or relic which has a stronger, deeper range.

    • 5

Hold the detector out in front of you, with the round base parallel to the ground, as you walk slowly, and pass it slowly side to side. Keep the detector base about 6 to 8 inches from the ground. Listen carefully to the speaker or headphones to hear the tones that correspond to the objects you're looking for.
