How to Identify a Real Montblanc Pen

The Montblanc company was founded in 1906 and is known among writers and collectors for its fine pens. Because of the Montblanc pen quality, there are many attempts by forgers to create fake Montblanc pens -- especially the popular and expensive Montblanc Meisterstruck. Knowing how to identify a genuine Montblanc pen can keep a buyer from wasting money on a forgery and keep a Montblanc pen collection authentic.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate a serial number on the ring clip. Montblanc pens manufactured after 1991 have a number consisting of two numbers and seven letters. Older models don't have this serial number.

    • 2

Look for "Germany" etched at the top of the ring clip. All models of the Montblanc have this designation.

    • 3

Identify the trademark floating star symbol on the pen. On real Montblancs, this trademark is white with six rounded points.

    • 4

Examine the inside of the barrel of the Montblanc using a flashlight. The barrel should have a translucent reddish glow due to the resin used to manufacture it. Only real Montblancs have this characteristic.

    • 5

Look at the nib. Fakes often include the words "iridium tip" but only the Montblanc "Starwalker" has these words stamped on the nib.
