How to Secure Magazines in a Notebook

Securing magazines in a notebook binder is a practical way to keep and store your favorite magazines. Whether you want to maintain the integrity of your magazines for reference, or simply like to peruse them on occasion, there are two methods of securing magazines into notebooks. The traditional method involves a heavy-duty hole punch, but the new method is accomplished by a simple plastic device that can be ordered online or purchased in office supply and stationery stores.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. Securing Magazines by Plastic Holder

    • 1

Open the three-ring notebook binder so the rings are visible. Open the rings. There is a button or lever to push that allows the rings to snap open. Older binders are sometimes difficult to open and will pinch fingers.

    • 2

Open the magazine to about the middle and lay the open magazine flat.

    • 3

Slip the opening, or slot, of the plastic magazine holder, over the front cover/left section of the open magazine.

    • 4

Align the plastic holder edge with the inside spine of the magazine. The plastic edge with the three holes will be on the outside, along the magazine's spine. Close the magazine.

    • 5

Insert the three holes of the plastic magazine holder onto the three rings of the notebook binder. Close the rings by grasping the rings and snapping shut.

Securing Magazines by Hole Punch Method

    • 6

Place the spine of the magazine between or beneath the punch. Brands and styles differ as to the loading of the item to be punched into the appliance.

    • 7

Push down on the lever or handle and punch through as many pages as the three-hole punch will cut. Most heavy-duty three-hole punches on the market will punch through anywhere from 32 to 35 pages at the same time. If your magazine is very thick, or if the punch didn't cut through the entire magazine, proceed to the next step. If your magazine features three neat holes completely cut through the area near the magazine spine, proceed to Step 5.

    • 8

Remove the magazine from the punch and with a pencil poke out any stray "holes" that are stuck in the holes cut by the punch. Reinsert the magazine into the hole punch aligning the previously cut holes with the hole punch.

    • 9

Press down on the lever or handle to penetrate through the previously cut holes and cut the remaining pages in the magazine. You may need to make several attempts.

    • 10

Open the notebook binder. Open the rings. There is a button or lever to push to open the rings. Feed the holes in the magazine over the rings in the notebook binder. Close the rings.
