Moss rose china derives its name from a popular pink-hued flower of the Victorian era. This rose emblazons various types of dish ware, which first gained popularity in the early 1800s. Though moss rose china is its own china subcategory, collectors divide this dish ware into types based on where it came from, what sort of dish it is, who made it and how old it is, among other distinctions.

Country of Origin
- Collectors divide moss rose china by type based on its country of origin. Moss rose china originates from England, whose Victorian society first decorated dishware with moss rose flower designs. Other European nations, including France and Germany, soon followed suit with their own types. In the following years, Japan began to produce its style of moss rose china.

- Perhaps most specifically, collectors divide moss rose china into types based on the individual lines produced by various manufacturers. For instance, Canonsburg's American Beauty line features three decals of pink moss rose sprigs. Royal Kent's Eternal Rose line features decals of a darker red rose color, accented by flowing vines. The Universal UNI22 line features rings of moss rose leaves accented by very pale pink flowers. Other lines include Paden City's Old Rose, Walbrzych's Vienna Rose, Lipper and Mann's Pompadour Rose, and Virginia Rose's Fluffy Rose.
