How to Change Zippo Lighter Flints

With the proliferation of the inexpensive disposable lighter, you may think that Zippo lighters have become extinct. This isn’t so. Zippo lighters, lighter fluid and flints are still available. Hunters and outdoorsmen especially like to carry Zippo lighters because they work well in light winds. There are even some Zippos that are considered somewhat waterproof. While it’s not likely that you will find a table lighter in someone’s dining room like you would have a few years ago, the Zippo lighter is still in use.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the inner workings of the lighter from its case. You should be able to just firmly pull it out. Some lighters, especially the pocket Zippo lighters, have a lever on the top that keeps the lighter from falling out of the case. If there is a lever, just flip it up so you can remove the workings. Set the case aside.

    • 2

Turn the lighter part upside down. You’ll see a small screw. Use a flat head screwdriver to remove the screw just enough so you can lift it out. There is a spring attached to the screw, so lift out both the screw and the spring.

    • 3

Turn the lighter upside down and tap it lightly against your hand to remove any fragments of flint that may still be in the lighter.

    • 4

Drop a new flint into the hole. Reinsert the spring and the small screw. Tighten the screw all the way down. Fill the cotton padding that is packed in the lighter around the screw with additional lighter fluid if it seems to be dry.

Place the lighter workings back into the lighter case and flip down the lever.
